- Processing: AI operates as an Azure Function or containerized service, running in the same tenant for latency and security reasons.
- Outbound: Structured data and AI summaries flow back via Duck Creek’s standard API contracts. Audit metadata is captured in Duck Creek’s native event log.
- Adjuster view: Duck Creek’s Producer/Adjuster portal renders AI-extracted fields natively; summaries appear as enriched claim notes.
Typical integration timeline with Duck Creek: 4-6 months, similar to Guidewire. The Azure ecosystem lock-in can be an advantage (single tenant, single auth model) or a constraint (if your AI processing needs to run elsewhere).
4.3. Custom legacy systems
This is where integration work genuinely can exceed the AI model work in hours. If your claims core is a heavily customized system from the 1990s or 2000s, the challenges compound:
- No modern API. Data exchange often happens via nightly batch files, proprietary message queues, or direct database access. AI needs to work with these constraints without requiring a full core replacement.
- Data model ambiguity. Custom systems frequently have fields with unclear semantics, inconsistent coding, and years of data drift. The AI can’t extract policy numbers correctly if policy numbers have been entered as text in 11 different formats over 15 years.
- Authentication and security. Custom systems rarely have modern OAuth or SSO. Integration often requires service accounts with elevated privileges - a compliance problem under the NAIC Model Bulletin that needs careful design.

- Pre-trained insurance models. A “customizable platform” that arrives empty means 18 months of model training. Vendors with pre-built models for your lines of business compress that to 4-6 months of tuning.
- Pilot without long-term commitment. Any vendor worth considering will run a 3-6 month pilot on a subset of claims without locking you into a multi-year contract. If they won’t, they don’t have confidence in their production performance.

- Adjuster adoption treated as a training exercise. The single biggest failure mode. Adjusters need to be in the pilot by month 3 as co-designers, not as end users to be trained in month 10.
